April 24, 2009

Flooding of your house can make you go through physical and mental turmoil. From ruining your home it is also capable of taking away the lives of your dear ones. But after the flooding is over one needs to think rationally and the first thing that comes to our mind is how and from where to begin the flood damage cleanup.

Nowadays one can relax by giving the entire job of flood damage cleanup to a professional team. They have a lot of experience in handling all kinds of flooding like sewage flooding, river flooding, flooding from a broken hose etc. They will give you a house which is speck and span and has no trace of any flood damage. But if you are considering of taking up the task of flood damage cleanup yourself then there are a few reminders which should be always kept in mind.

First, in a flood damage cleanup one should assess the amount of water that might be present and the amount of damage it could have done to your home.

Make sure that the flood water is drained out completely before venturing for a flood damage cleanup; this is done for the safety of the people entering the house.

Water is a good conductor of heat. Hence, you should switch off all the electrical appliances even the lights which can cause a short circuit and electrocute a person to cause his/her death. One can also consult a professional electrician to do this job for you.

If the flood water is of higher level then a pump is needed to withdraw all the water. But if you use an electrical pump then make sure that the electrical source is outside the house or it is even safer if one uses a gas powered pump during a flood damage cleanup.

Wearing proper clothing is necessary like, hand gloves, masks, rubber boots and a hard hat so that in case the water has loosened some of the foundation of the ceiling and your head is safe from falling pieces of stones and cement. Plus if there is any mold formation due to accumulation of water for a few days then it is important to wear a protective mask because mold can cause respiratory problems.

It is great to have as much man power as you can so that all the furniture can be moved out and the walls and floor can be cleaned thoroughly. Before putting the furniture back make sure to remove all the mud from it. Dispose all such items which are beyond repair.

Flood water brings with it lots of contaminants, so a through need for disinfection is required to avoid health hazard during and after a flood damage cleanup.

Performing a flood damage cleanup is a very tedious task, so do not try to do everything in one day itself. It is important to take rest in between in order to pace yourself and not to get fatigued. Do not feel sad about the discarded items, with time one can redecorate his/her home with new things.

Basic Flood Damage Cleanup for Homeowners

March 27, 2009

Flooding is one of the most common natural disasters that severely damage your home. River overflows, unexpected storms, nonstop torrential rains are some of the major causes of flooding. Sometimes, man-made disasters like bursting and leaking pipes causes flooding. In fact, if you reside in a low-lying area, then flooding tends to become regular problem of your home. Whatever be the case, homeowners must perform flood damage cleanup so that they could improve the conditions of the house.

Before you undertake any flood damage cleanup, make sure that you have taken necessary safety precautions. You must turn off all the electric power so that neither you nor cleanup professionals are electrocuted. Added to this ensure that electrical appliances are unplugged. It would be sensible if you hire qualified professionals in dealing with electricity, then your safety will be ensured. They will check switches and sockets for integrity. If the electrician detects any defective unit, then either he will replace it or remove and seal. After the flood damage cleanup if you want to use the plug point then you break the seal and use it accordingly.

The first step of flood damage cleanup involves in removing the stagnant or standing water. For this purpose you must use submersible pumps. These are powerful battery operated pumps. If you don’t have such pumps, then you can either borrow or rent it. The operation of this pump is very easy and you can operate it manually. After you have removed stagnant water it would be best if you use chamois cloth or super-absorbent sponges.

Mud, dirt, debris removal is one of the daunting tasks of flood damage cleanup. The more quickly you remove them, your property and house will suffer from less damage. Pressurized pumps can easily serve the purpose. However, there are some alternatives are available to it. For example, hoses with standard pressure also give fruitful results.

After your home gets affected with flood, its structural integrity also suffers a lot. Ensure that flood has not damaged the floorings. This will put you and your family member’s life at risk. Insulation materials tend to get badly damaged if it is under water for longer period of time. So, instead of repairing it, replacing will save the entire structure of your house. If your flooring has tiles, then a good cleaning will easily serve the purpose. Tiles are known to endure damages a lot. So, if you pay extra attention you don’t have to replace it.

Since, floodwater comes with contact with other contaminated water, it therefore becomes the cradle of disease producing bacteria and microorganism. Your flood damage cleanup activity remains incomplete, if you don’t spray proper disinfectant and fungicide. You can start the primary cleaning process with bleach and warm water. The cleaning process must be done thoroughly as to prevent the growth of mold and mildews.

Dehumidifiers and air dryers are known to help a lot in flood damage cleanup. You must remember that faster your drier process ends, your property and house will suffer less.

Sewage Damage Cleanup – Necessary Health and Sanitary Precautions

March 5, 2009

Flood damage cleanup process is the effort to restore normalcy in the flood affected area and this kind of effort aims to provide basic needs of the flood victims like providing food, clothes, medicines, and temporary shelters if possible. In this primary range of requirements the precaution for health and proper sanitation goes beyond the planning of primary flood damage cleanup program that includes sewage damage cleanup program in post-flood period.

Out of the whole program of flood damage cleanup process, sanitation problem poses the biggest threat to health in after flood period. In fact the severity of the threat depends on the substance of the sewage and the degree of the infiltration in the living environment caused by the sewage materials, porosity of contaminated material, quantity of sewage, and the time period the sewage materials remain in contact with building materials. That is the reason sewage damage cleanup program needs to be planned scientifically and with all possible preventions.

Sewage damage cleanup is the vital part of flood damage cleanup process and the whole process is divided in to two major parts, chemical disinfection and physical cleaning of the system.

Physical cleanup process comes first because it involves the cleanup of the area which was contaminated by sewage water and materials. The intensity of the physical cleaning process includes some evaluation of the situations like, estimated contaminated area, intensity of damage, duration for the contamination and type of the materials contaminated by the intrusion of flood water. The number of ventilation outlet is also a prime factor for primary cleanup process and without a sanguine idea about these factors; it is tough to run the sewage damage cleanup process in its proper direction by anticipation and individual effort.

The process of sewage damage cleanup includes removal of flood water, debris out of the flood, cleanup of the sewage waste products. Removal of the garbage like materials will clean the processed place or the contaminated system physically.

Chemical disinfectants are used to keep a contaminated place germ and infection free. The germicide formula of chemical disinfectant destroys bacteria, molds, and infection initiating viruses. Unless these two phases are executed, the real motive to restore normalcy by sewage damage cleanup program remains unfulfilled.

Before starting on any kind of sewage damage cleanup process, it is better to take proper precaution by wearing a water proof dress and hand gloves to avoid further chance on infection.

There is a myth that when the flood water comes from ocean or from river, is free from the microorganisms and bacteria, thus causes less danger to health. On contrary, wherever there is stagnant water and it is contaminated with sewage water must be positive to bacteria, pathogens, viruses, microorganisms, germs and microbes. When these microorganisms are trapped inside carpet, mattress and other places inside room, it creates odor as well spreads serious infection.

It is better to provide this hazardous task to some trade expert to execute the whole process of sewage damage cleanup process to run.

Water Damage Repair and Your Household

February 5, 2009

Every now and then we find our belongings inside the house to have some sort of damage. We find them being moldy or with some sort of fungi growing on them and sometimes we even find them to have some smell. This could be a problem especially if these things are very important to us.

Sometimes we do not know what the reason for this is and what people should know is that most of the time, these things happen because of excess moisture. Excess moisture in the air makes the room temperature go down a few notches and the water on your belongings especially paper and leather based objects become the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. These conditions are the best possible situation for them to grow and proliferate. When this happens, it is highly possible that you have water damage somewhere and there is a need for your intervention.

Water damage repair can take care of this mess but it would be better if one takes the necessary precautions to prevent water damage at all. One should know where to look and recognize the early signs of water damage so that the repair will not cost too much.

The first thing to think about in water damage repair is that water in unexpected places is always unwanted water. In fact this could be damaging water. There are a lot of places in the house that we want to keep dry as much as possible and any excess water in it could be very harmful to the objects inside the house. For the most part we want our things to be free of moisture as moisture can only be harmful to a lot of things. This is why it is important to check which areas of the house have excessive moisture.

Water can come from a lot of different places in our house. It can come from a leaky faucet for example in an adjoining bathroom. Water damage repair is thus easy. A lot of times, water damage repair does not involve actual repair but simply making sure that things are set in their proper positions. Water damage repair can therefore involve making sure that a faucet is shut properly or even aligning pipes that may be slanted and allow for water to seep out through the hinges.

Water damage repair is really very basic at times and if damage does occur it is mostly the fault of the people in the house. Common sense goes a long way in ensuring that your household is free form any unwanted water. People should make sure that areas that need to be dry remain dry. Water damage repair only involves big repairs when things are not set properly and minor problems are exponentially increased through time. For this reason, water damage repair when done properly involves only minor repairs and may be done by almost anyone.

When people learn more about water damage repair, they will know that it is in fact simple and not costly if done early and properly.

Preventing Water Damage – Your Everyday Checklist

January 14, 2009

Water damage, in itself, is costly because it results in losses. The value of lost items is sometimes, measured in financial terms; sometimes sentimental; sometimes, both. Restoring one’s home after a water-related disaster adds to the cost. What’s more it is laborious, and time-consuming. The best way to way avoid all of those is to protect your home from water damage.

Easy said, does it? But how does one lessen or completely eliminate the possibility of water damaging one’s home?

One of the common household reasons for water damage is leaks in plumbing system (sink, toilet, bathroom), and in roofs and walls. There are a number of reasons why homes develop leaks. Perhaps the material used is porous or of low-quality, or the splices were not sealed properly. Excessive humidity level and groundwater are also another common causes of water damage.

One way to do this is to regularly check your plumbing for signs of damage or break. One indication that your pipe needs to be repaired or replaced is if it shows any discoloration. Prevention is better than cure, as saying goes, and it applies just as well to home living. Fixing leak problems immediately at the smallest sign of it will save your property and save you money, time, and effort in the long run.

Check also your air conditioners and water heaters. If there are wet spots in the units, call a professional to check for problems with your heating and cooling units. Having your air conditioners and heaters checked by professional at least once a year will help them in good condition.

Regularly check your sump pumps to see if they are working well. Look for cracks in the walls outside building structure.

Inspect your roof for holes, breaks, or cracks in the shingles and for corrosion in roofing valleys. Check your ceiling for water stains and for cracks or damage in the chimney. Detecting and fixing minor problems will prevent roof leaks, and prevent you from spending big on major roof repair.

Regularly check your gutter and free it of leaves, twigs, and other debris. Make sure your downspout is also pointed away from your building.

Have a professional regularly check your humidifier as well. When days get humid, make sure your humidifier is working properly. Choose humidifiers that regulate humidity level automatically.

Another way to minimize water damage is to waterproof areas and materials inside your home. There are four basic types of waterproofing: surface waterproofing, integral waterproofing, hyrdrophanous waterproofing, and flexible waterproofing. Waterproofing, in its simplest definition, is the application of coating to prevent water from damaging a material. Some of the products used in waterproofing includes vinyl, and resins.

While natural disasters like hurricane and flooding cannot be prevented, some sources of water damage can be prevented. Roof leak, pipe leak and other plumbing problems, chimney drips, and other such problems are some household sources of water damage at home. Regularly checking leak-prone parts of your home and correcting the problems at their slightest sign will prevent occurrence of water damage. In turn, it will keep your home free from damages and keep you from spending on restoration costs.

How to Start a Flooded Basement Cleanup

December 26, 2008

When you experience a flood, your basement will experience the most damage. Severe damage from flooding will often occur in your basement. This is why a flooded basement cleanup can be an essential step for homeowners looking for ways to restore their property back to the way it was prior to the flooding. Water can always find a way into your home and since the basement is the lowest point, it can be easily flooded, even with only the tiniest crack in the wall. Your lawn will become saturated during the flood or heavy rainstorm and the water can find a way to flow inside. Clogged gutters and downspouts that don’t point away from the house can also result in water flooding. The most difficult thing about the flooding is how to start your flooded basement cleanup process.

If you are a homeowner who has dealt with flooding before, you will most likely own a submersible pump or wet vacuum. If it is your first time dealing with this kind of damage, you will want to look into purchasing one of these items for your home or borrowing one from your neighbors or friends. Look for a portable pump that can be run manually in case you do not have access to electrical power. Also, you can rent these machines and appliances as well for your flooded basement cleanup.

Before you start working on your flooded basement cleanup, make sure that your house I structurally sound and see if there are any major damages that could affect its stability. You will have to turn off all fuel, electrical and gas powers. Also, look for any leaks in your pipes that could cause serious problems in the future. If the rain has stopped and the flood waters have stopped increasing, you can start your flooded basement cleanup process by airing out the house. Try to open window to increase air circulation and prevent your home from getting too humid. Try to turn on your heating system, if this is possible, and look for dehumidifiers and air fans to hasten the drying processes of the flooded basement cleanup.

If your basement is completely underwater, try to remove the water slowly. There might be water pressure that you are dealing with and it could be impacting your basement walls. By removing the water slowly, you will not have to deal with the water pressure causing your walls to cave in. After pumping out the water, make sure to make a mark on the wall to record your progress. Overnight, you will have to see if any water has continued to rise. If the water has not risen, pump out a few more feet and make another mark. Continue this slow process over the next few days for the safety of your home. It can take several days to pump water out this way, but it will help your foundation and walls deal with the additional water pressure during the flooded basement cleanup.

Water Damage Restoration: Can Photographs be Saved?

December 26, 2008

If you are experience the aftermath of a flood or have suffered severe water damage in your home or a storage area that contained important photographs you really don’t want to throw away, it is possible that effective water damage restoration could save many photos. Water damage restoration needs to be started as soon as the damage is discovered, preferably before photos stick together or to mattes and photo frames they may be positioned in.

If the photographs have not started to stick together but are wet, set them out on a clean surface immediately, facing up. You may want to set something heavy on the corners to hold them flat if they are starting to curve inward. Water damage restoration is relatively easy in this case, as most photos will dry out with clear pictures. If the picture is not clear, you can contact a photo restoration service to try and bring back the previous coloring.

If you have photos that are stuck together, then you need to use a water damage restoration process that involves soaking and freezing. Try not to touch the front of the pictures because wet photos can be very fragile. Soak them in slightly warm water for about an hour, changing the water if it becomes too dirty before the time is up.

If you are concerned with losing our pictures entirely by this soaking process, it is a great idea to take another picture of the one on top if possible. Most digital cameras will allow you to focus in close on a photo and recapture the image in a new picture. This digital file could later be sent to a service providing water damage restoration service if all else fails.

After soaking, the pictures should be loose enough that you can pull them apart with minimal damage. This will work in many cases, but may not work in all situations.

The soaking process can actually be effective for photos that are stuck to the glass of a frame. You may be able to still take a new picture of the picture in the frame, or scan it into your computer with the glass. This in turn could also be provided to a service providing water damage restoration.

Wet photos should be rinsed in clean water and then stored in a plastic bag, either individually or with wax paper between each photograph. After freezing them you can let them thaw out then let them air dry face up on a table or clean cloth or piece of plastic.

Do not dry wet photographs in direct sunlight. This method of water damage restoration for wet photographs may not work for photos that have been stuck together for very long periods of time or which were not in great condition to begin with.

If your home was in a major flood where your belongings sat for a long period of time before you could salvage items, make sure to take other precautions against parasites and diseases which are often in toxic flood waters. Pictures may need to be sanitized in other ways if they were covered in such water for a long period of time.
